About

Ronald Lee Goodman Jr. (Artist)
The great expanses and sights and sounds of the natural world have always been a lure for South Georgia artist Ronald Goodman. Throughout his life, Ronald has immersed himself in the woods, fields, and waterways around his country home. Working with family in gardens and fishing and hunting with both his Grandpa’s were important modeling factors in a life spent outdoors.

Early on, Ronald began independently fishing and hunting from area ponds and creeks and hunting and trapping from the forests and fields. Never much the student type, he endured school by daydreaming of being outside. At ten, he began working by cropping tobacco, cutting grass, and welding alongside his father Ronnie. His life was straight forward and typical up until he was eighteen.

On July 4, 1985, just 37 days after his eighteenth birthday, a second of careless thinking instantly changed Ronald’s life. While fishing with friends on the Ocmulgee river near Fitzgerald, Georgia, he dove into shallow water, striking the sandy bottom, shattering his neck’s vertebrae and severing his spinal cord. Unknowing buddies watched, expecting him jokingly to surface near them as his paralyzed and limp body was washed along the river’s bottom. A minute or more passed before he popped up 100 feet downriver, floating face down. His friends quickly dashed to his rescue and retrieved him just before he inhaled. Alive and wanting to live life even more, Ronald spent the next four months in an Atlanta rehabilitation hospital, then went back home to learn a new way of living.

Although his life had changed so dramatically in that moment, he would not surrender his love for the outdoors. Having the heart of a naturalist, he considered majoring in Wildlife Biology or even Wildlife management to become a Game Warden. However, an elective art class at Fitzgerald High School persuaded him to get an Art degree from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) in nearby Tifton, Georgia.

A lot has happened since he made that decision to pursue art as a “job” back in 1989. Becoming an artist “out of due time” has led Ronald down a trail he never imagined. That path has been filled with adventures and blessings--like meeting thousands of new people while traveling across the country for art exhibitions. Most of all , it has strengthened his faith in God and cemented his family bonds. With major help from his family, Ronald has done his best to show nature's magnificence by applying the talent with which God has richly blessed him.

Working in coordination with colleges such as ABAC and The University of Georgia, as well as with school districts, civic groups, and environmentalist groups, Ronald has taught young and old about art and nature and life itself.

Today, Ronald works mostly from “The Buzzard Roost Studio” at his home in Fitzgerald, Georgia. Most of his work continues to be wildlife and nature oriented. Now he also delves into diverse genres, mediums and ways of expressing himself, including writing and photography. He uses the Web as a major conduit to share his work.

A rumor has it that Ronald paints and draws by using a mouth stick. That is just a rumor. Even though his hands are paralyzed, he uses special splints to help himself hold his working utensils. Along with the splints he works with several different types of custom made tables and easels created by his brother Tracy and late father Ronnie to hold the art he creates.

Ronald has been honored to exhibit in many galleries, museums and art exhibitions. He expressed his gratitude to the many organizations and individuals that have used his art to help others and to foster wildlife conservation.
