"Well Resident" -
(Chimney Swift - Caesura pelagica)
Acrylic on Masonite - Image size - 11"x 14" - $1600
Chimney Swifts are summer visitors to Fitzgerald. This bird species has benefited immensely from the construction of chimneys and other hollow structures. Chimneys provide an excellent place for the Swifts to roost nightly and build their nests .The small Swift is almost constantly in flight and can regularly be seen in search of insects. On late summer afternoons as dusk approaches, it is not uncommon to see thousands of these small Swifts chattering and circling large smokestacks and chimneys. The mass of birds circle their roosting target until the just the right moment. Suddenly, one bird darts inside and within minutes the entire swarm has disappeared into the chimney. I got the idea for "Well Resident" from a nesting pair of Swifts that use an old well on my brother's property as their summer home.
