"In The Leaf Litter" - Eastern Box Turtle
Eastern box turtles are a very common sight in South Georgia. Living in the sticks, it is not unusual to see these little land turtles 2 or 3 times a week during the warmer weather. The box turtle's spots range from white to bright yellow to an orangish red. The small turtles are often seen crossing the highways and roads of South Georgia. Though protected, some people even make pets of them. On my parents' and brother's property, box turtles are common and can often be found nesting and congregating in wire grass patches . The best way to find a box turtle is to have a young dog along with you. Over the years, young pups that I have had have used box turtles as tote and teething toys. Many times I have seen my young dogs find and gnaw on the small turtles' shells, not hurting the turtle, just using him for a while. |
